“That Which Calls You Home” This piece comes from a combination of a psychedelic experience I had as well as an explanation given by the Buddha about reincarnation. In my experience with psychedelics, I felt all of gross reality distilled into simple geometric shapes, tiles of diamonds in bright hues, before breaking apart and dissolving into the void. I was frightened at my loss of the material plane, and the eternal void in front of me. A deep humming sound came from it, and I felt as though I would be swallowed by nothingness. It wasn’t until later that I realized that the void wasn’t empty, it was full of the potential of all things, so when I painted the void, I added two mountains to the center, one in winter and one in summer. The mountain is a reminder of the illustration the Buddha gave (and which I heard about from Ram Dass)  about reincarnation and for how many years we’ve been taking birth in order to learn and grow. He said to imagine a mountain a mile high, a mile deep, and a mile wide, and every lifetime a bird flies with a silk scarf in its beak. The silk scarf barely brushes the surface of the mountain, eroding a tiny bit each time. The time it takes to erode the whole mountain is the time it takes for a soul to reach enlightenment. In my depiction, I have the mountain shaped like two mountains, mirroring each-other. The center of the mountain is a ball of ice that contains a flower, representing the flower that conceals the jewel of the heart, or the soul. The soul emanates a yellow light that represents all the ways your soul calls to you, while the bird’s flight path is illuminated by blue light, that also represents the silk scarf that caresses the mountainside. The butterflies are reminders of the lightness and joy that can be a part of incarnating and learning what it is to be a manifested soul.
